Not quite your biblical revelation, but algae is fast becoming a source for fuel and food. Algae pilot plants in Nicaragua are producing high yields of cooking oil and food additive by products. Algae was the original green food additive so fondly pushed by the natural health food channel. In Nicaragua a local algae plant has found the perfect high yielding algae strain that produces a low cost sustainable cooking oil for its citizens. Assisted by US investment, the algae plant has provided a low cost cooking oil that is sold by the government to its citizens. The powder that is left over from this process is then harvested and sold to companies like Cargill and ADM for inclusion into food products sold here in the US. Algae grows everywhere, but it does particularly well by the equator. Hence the start up plant in Nicaragua. It has a low cost to produce and harvest in this environment. It is providing new green jobs in Nicaragua. Who would have thought that the stuff growing in your pool could someday feed and provide fuel for the world.
