This country will add another 100 million people by the year 2050. Right now we’re at 350 million people. Can you imagine another 100 million? How many more people can we cram into place likes California and Rhode Island? California is already at 50 million, does this mean they will pick up another 10-20? California is the same size as Japan. Japan has a population of 120 million, so I guess they can go up to that number, but would you want to live there then?
Current estimates are that these people will originate from an influx of new immigrants and higher birth rates from lower income demographics. All of this overpopulation has an impact on our ability to feed people around the world. This continued encroachment impacts the world’s biodiversity in plant and animal species. The Center For Biological Diversity in Tucson, AZ has come up with a novel way to attract attention to all of this unchecked human propagation. On Valentine’s Day they will hand out over 100 million condoms around this country to highlight the threat to biodiversity here. The condoms will be imprinted with pictures and descriptions of species that are endangered in this country. They’ll make great birthday party blow up balloon figures too! Animals like the Spotted Owl and Polar Bear will be featured on the condom. The group plans on handing out six different packages with original artwork. Slogans on the packages include, “Wrap with care, save the Polar Bear”, and “Wear a condom now, save the Spotted Owl.” The endangered species condoms will be handed out at bars, supermarkets, schools, and public events. I’m just waiting to see if the World Wildlife Federation will get behind this on a global scale. What a great way to raise awareness for endangered species across the world.
