Score one for reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.
A federal appeals court is upholding the first federal regulations to reduce the gases blamed for global warming. The rules, which were challenged by industry groups and states, will reduce emissions of six heat-trapping gases from large industrial facilities, such as factories and power plants, as well as automobile tailpipes. A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington said Tuesday that the Environmental Protection Agency was “unambiguously correct” in using existing federal law to address global warming. The court denied two of the challenges, including one arguing the agency erred in concluding greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare. It is incomprehensible that industrial enterprises sought to argue against the science that greenhouse gases do not impact human health. We are at a tipping point in stemming global warming. Industry must step up and acknowledge the science behind global warming, and do the right thing to reduce their emissions. Even those states that sided with industry know better that saying gashouse emissions do not harm people. They are not serving the publics interest to deny the science behind greenhouse gas emissions and its impact on the health of the people and this planet.
