Those of you who fly on a regular basis are use to hearing the TSA announcements over the airport’s PA system. You’ve heard that one announcement that states that the current travel advisory is now orange. Our TSA has developed a color-coded warning system to alert the ever-fearful traveling public of the terrorist dangers that lurk at the airport food courts.
The advisory color orange has not changed for over two years. (Does that mean we’ve been successful, or are on the verge of a major catastrophe?) On a recent trip through the San Francisco airport that same announcement triggered a thought; why not have a color-coded warning system for our environment. I’m applying a simpler solution, one based on our ubiquitous traffic light. Red for- OMG, the polar ice caps have melted and New York City is now submerged under forty feet of water! Yellow- we can’t make up our mind to speed through the light, or slow down for the impending red light. We do this everyday on the road. I equate our current environmental thinking to the same principle. We can’t make up our mind if we really want to do something about the environment, just look at what happened during and after the Copenhagen negotiations. Nothing. Most countries will not do much, some will make an effort to correct their environmental practices, and some will actually make huge in roads at solving their current woes. By not doing anything we are running the risk of going through that red light. Actually doing something about it gets us to slow down and stop. Because then we be in line waiting for that light to turn green for go. And a green light is where we all would like to be at on the environment. Anyone want to drag?
