May Day has a long storied history. It currently celebrates the social and economic achievements of labor movements around the world, particularly in socialist and communist states. It is synonymous with International Worker’s Day. Not something you see heavily covered in your local evening news.

US labor organizations also support the celebration of May Day here. In pagan times particularly in the northern parts of Europe it became a day to celebrate the half way point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. As Christianity sought to assimilate pagan holidays unto its own May Day became a day to celebrate the Virgin Mary. The maypole was also an ancient tradition used to celebrate the first days of spring and of planting. May baskets used to be given on the first day of May. These baskets would contain nuts, candies, and small items to celebrate the 1st day of May and the coming days of summer. This tradition has slowly died out in the 20th century. What ever celebration rocks your boat we wish you a happy May Day. Long live the revolution!
