This year’s Solar Home Decathlon is taking place in Madrid Spain.
Last’s year’s decathlon was held in Washington D.C on the Mall. This is the first time the solar exhibition is taking place in Europe. Seventeen teams from around the world have entered eco-friendly home designs into the competition. All entrants are required to build their entry for consideration to win this year 2010 Solar Decathlon. Two of the seventeen entrants are from the United States: The University of Florida and Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. The rules for entrance require that all of the solar homes be of prefab construction and are graded on their ability to minimize their energy use, innovative architecture and engineering, and sustainability. The solar designs being presented are cutting edge and would stand out from our traditional home designs. But, these efforts represent the future for a sustainable CO2 free existence in home building and design, and should be viewed in that manner. These are exciting times for the green movement. With new solar home design options growing for consumers, and with the release of future hybrid and all electric vehicles, we the people will be able to make choices in sustainability that have to date been far and few. The advent of new eco-friendly choices for consumers only hastens the demise of a carbon fuel based society. This in itself is worth taking a look at these designs.
