Supermarket News, the grocery store trade publication issued a warning to their industry this past week. That growing consumer awareness of GMO’s in foods bought at their stores will lead to a backlash from the public.

How Many GMO Items Can You Spot?
Genetically Modified Foods is becoming a growing consumer issue. Greenies, and those main stream consumers that shop at Whole Foods, Health Food Stores, and grocery stores that have added strong organic and green sections, are already catering to the non-GMO buying public. Supermarket News states that main stream consumers will eventually identify GMO’s with high carb and high fatty foods. They’ll avoid purchasing them, and will demand that every food item being sold, identify themselves as being GMO or non-GMO. Identifying GMO foods will eventually fall upon the honesty of food manufacturers and grocery store chains, unless the U.S. Government forces the issue by legislating it onto food labels. The current food labels only identify fat contents, sugar, vitamin, carbohydrates, and protein content of the food being sold. GMO inclusion information will help consumers in determining whether they wish to purchase this food item or not. Government needs to legislate this inclusion, and it needs to be all encompassing on every ingredient used in creating a food product. The sad state of feeding the world is falling upon GMO foods. The world cannot sustain itself on current agricultural yields, and GMO foods are filling the gap. Unfortunately, long range studies of GMO foods impact on human health have not been facilitated by the industry or government. This needs to change, and we as consumers need to know if what we are buying is GMO or not. The consequences of long term GMO ingestion must be ascertained as well. Eventually, it should be up to an informed consumer whether we want to purchase GMO or not.

I totally agree! I hope a law gets put into place mandating GM food labels. As the consumer, I think….why take the risk? I don’t want to take part in this human feeding experiment.
