Happy New Year to one and all.  All the best for 2010.  The Aughts are over, and we are now on to our next decade.  New Year’s resolutions have been made, most of those will not make it to February, but hey resolutions are made to be broken. So since we’re in the New Year, I’d like to make a few new Top Ten decade predictive resolutions for all things earthy.

1. The entire U.S. electric use gets switched to digital smart grids.  All power plants, homes, business use smart devices to operate and regulate their electric use.  Power companies use smart grids to regulate electric demand, consumers use them to eliminate waste and regulate their own use.  2010 estimates that the U.S. will spend $200 billion to ramp up smart grid installations.

2.  Communities around the country re-write their ordinances allowing for wind turbines to be put on top of people’s homes.

3.  All electric vehicle re-charge stations are installed around the country.  All Federal, State, and Municipal vehicle fleets are converted to a mix of hybrid, hydrogen, and all electric. By 2020 all gasoline vehicles can only account for 25% of vehicle traffic on the road.

4. The U.S. within the next decade achieves 50% electric generation from renewable energy sources derived from solar, wind, wave, biofuel, and geothermal.

5.  CO2 emissions are reduced by 20%.

6.  Sprawl is ended, and we all go back to redeveloping our inner cities.

7.  For every tree that is cut down we plant four.

8.  All plastic wrap around packaging is banned from consumer goods.

9.  High speed rail service becomes a reality, connecting major metropolitan areas around the country, and by high speed,  I mean 200 mph +.  At least finish building the Chicago hub connecting Detroit, St. Louis, Minneapolis, and Indianapolis.

10.  Vertical farming becomes a reality in every major city.  Growing crops 24/7.  Local produce will never taste better.

Here’s to the next decade.  May all of our dreams and aspirations come true.
